What a cookie actually is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. It is not a program and it cannot read anything else on your device. Ours exist for three reasons: to keep the site from breaking, to remember whether you accepted or declined tracking, and to give us a rough idea of which pages people read. That is the whole list.

We also use localStorage, which is a similar storage area in your browser. It holds the same consent choice so we do not ask you again on every visit.

Strictly necessary cookies

These make the site work and cannot be switched off through our banner. The main one keeps your session alive while you move between pages, so a booking form does not lose your details halfway through. Another stores a security token that stops other sites from submitting forms on your behalf.

  • Session cookie for form and booking flow, cleared when you close the browser
  • Security token to prevent cross-site form submission, valid for one hour
  • Load balancer cookie so a booking stays on one server, valid for the session

Preference and consent cookies

When you click accept or decline on the cookie banner, we write your choice to localStorage under the key spavulo.consent.2024. That entry has no expiry date, which means it stays until you clear your browser storage or choose again. It holds a single word, either accepted or essential-only, and nothing that identifies you.

If you decline, we do not load any analytics script at all. The choice is respected on every page view, and there is no third attempt to ask again in the same browser.

Analytics cookies

These only appear if you press accept. They count visits, tell us which pages are read most and show where people give up on a form. The data is aggregated, so we see that sixty people viewed the chef's table page, not that you personally did. They expire after thirteen months.

We do not run advertising cookies, we do not build profiles across other websites, and we do not sell this data. If that changes, this page will say so and the banner will ask again.

  • Page view counter, thirteen months
  • Form drop-off tracker, six months
  • Referral source record, three months

Changing your mind

To change your choice, clear the site data for spavulo.com in your browser settings and reload the homepage. The banner will appear again and you can pick differently. Every major browser has this in its privacy or history menu, usually under clear browsing data or site settings.

You can also block cookies outright in browser settings. The site will still load, but the booking form may reset if you navigate away and back, and we will ask for your consent on every visit because we cannot store the answer.
